19th Drukrig Colloquium

Who are the Divine Messengers of Bhutan

Date : January 26, 2022

This session explores the revered figures in Bhutanese culture who are considered to be divine messengers. These figures, rooted in the nation’s rich Buddhist tradition, are believed to carry sacred teachings, protect the land, and guide the Bhutanese people spiritually. Central to this discussion are figures such as Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is credited with bringing Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan, and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified Bhutan under a Buddhist system of governance. Additionally, the session highlights the role of the Tertons (treasure revealers), individuals believed to be divinely inspired to unearth sacred relics and teachings. The local deities and spiritual protectors, such as Mahakala and Pelden Lhamo, also play a significant role in safeguarding the land and its people. Together, these divine messengers embody the deep spiritual connection between the people of Bhutan and their religious heritage.
