30th Drukrig Colloquium

Leveraging satellites for connectivity in remote areas of developing countries & Space programme of Bhutan

Date : December 21, 2022

This session explores the transformative potential of satellite technology in providing connectivity to remote areas of developing countries, with a focus on Bhutan’s own space program. The first part discusses how satellites can bridge the connectivity gap in regions where traditional infrastructure is difficult or impossible to implement. Satellite-based solutions, such as broadband internet and communication systems, can bring crucial services like education, healthcare, and emergency response to underserved communities. This section highlights successful global examples and explores the challenges and opportunities for Bhutan in leveraging such technology.

The second part focuses on Bhutan's emerging space program, examining how the country is positioning itself to use space technology for national development. This includes initiatives aimed at satellite-based communication, disaster monitoring, environmental management, and improving connectivity in remote regions. The session discusses the objectives, current progress, and future plans of Bhutan’s space program, along with the potential for international collaboration in advancing Bhutan’s technological capabilities. Together, these topics illustrate how space technology can enhance connectivity, drive innovation, and support sustainable development in Bhutan and similar developing nations.
