Recalibrating the Perspective on Tibetan and Himalayan History: Identity- and Nation-Building in Bhutan

Date : February 21, 2024

This session reexamines the historical narrative of the Tibetan and Himalayan regions, focusing on how these histories have shaped the identity and nation-building process in Bhutan. By shifting the lens through which we view the past, this discussion seeks to offer a more nuanced understanding of Bhutan's development, its relationship with its Himalayan neighbors, and how Bhutan’s unique path has been influenced by both external and internal forces.

The session highlights the role of Tibet and the broader Himalayan region in shaping Bhutanese cultural, religious, and political landscapes. It explores the historical interplay between Bhutan and Tibet, including the influence of Tibetan Buddhism, the exchange of cultural and intellectual ideas, and the role of Bhutan as a geographical and spiritual crossroads in the region.

Focusing on Bhutan’s own identity-building process, the session also explores how Bhutan has crafted its distinct national identity over time, rooted in its rich cultural heritage, spiritual traditions, and commitment to preserving its sovereignty. The impact of Bhutan’s political structure, with its emphasis on the monarchy, theocracy, and the integration of these elements into a unified nation-state, will be examined.

This recalibration of historical perspectives underscores how Bhutan has navigated its place within the Himalayan and Tibetan context while maintaining a unique trajectory of nation-building, characterized by an adherence to Gross National Happiness (GNH), sustainable development, and cultural preservation. Through this examination, the session offers fresh insights into how Bhutan continues to shape its national identity, drawing on its history while engaging with the modern world.
