44th Drukrig Colloquium

Development of a palliative care model for Bhutan

Date : March 20, 2024

This session focuses on the development of a palliative care model tailored to Bhutan's unique healthcare needs, cultural values, and social context. Palliative care, which aims to improve the quality of life for patients with serious or life-limiting illnesses, is an area of growing importance in Bhutan’s healthcare system, particularly as the population ages and the incidence of chronic diseases rises.

The session explores the challenges and opportunities in integrating palliative care into Bhutan's healthcare system, including the need for specialized training for healthcare providers, the establishment of support systems for families, and the importance of culturally sensitive approaches. The discussion will cover the core components of palliative care, including pain management, emotional support, and end-of-life care, while respecting Bhutan’s Buddhist values, which emphasize compassion, mindfulness, and dignity.

Key considerations for the model include building a network of trained professionals, ensuring access to necessary medications and services in remote areas, and fostering community-based initiatives that provide holistic care for both patients and their families. Additionally, the session will examine Bhutan's approach to incorporating palliative care into its healthcare policies and the importance of raising awareness about the significance of compassionate care in the end-of-life process.

Through this session, participants will gain insight into the steps Bhutan is taking to establish a sustainable, accessible, and culturally appropriate palliative care model that aligns with the country's values and healthcare priorities. The ultimate goal is to provide comfort, dignity, and support for individuals facing serious illness, while strengthening the healthcare system to better serve all Bhutanese citizens.
