Thinking Climate as Clime: Aquatic Land, Anthropocenic Water, and Multispecies Assemblies

Date : April 17, 2024

This session invites a deep reflection on the interconnections between climate, water, and ecosystems, focusing on the concept of "clime"—the interplay between climate, environment, and human influence. It explores how aquatic land and water systems have been affected by the Anthropocene, an epoch defined by human-induced environmental changes, and how these systems are integral to multispecies assemblies in both local and global contexts.

The discussion centers on understanding the fluidity of water, not just as a resource but as a dynamic, living element that shapes and is shaped by human and non-human interactions. Water, in this context, is seen not only as a physical substance but as part of larger ecological and social systems. The session will explore how water bodies, wetlands, rivers, and lakes in the Anthropocene are experiencing shifts in their form, function, and significance due to climate change, urbanization, and other human impacts.

The concept of "multispecies assemblies" draws attention to the diverse communities of organisms—human and non-human—that rely on water ecosystems and how these relationships are evolving. This includes an examination of how different species adapt to or are displaced by environmental changes, and the role of water in shaping biodiversity and community resilience.

By thinking of climate as "clime," the session challenges conventional notions of climate change as an isolated phenomenon and offers a more integrated, multispecies perspective on environmental change. Participants will be encouraged to think about the complex interrelations between climate, water, and society, and consider new approaches to environmental stewardship that recognize the interconnectedness of all species and ecosystems in the face of climate challenges.
